Is Law of Attraction a Religion?

God on the ceilingAll religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man’s life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom. –Albert Einstein

It has been suggested that the study and application of Law of Attraction is, in essence, a religion or perhaps at least a religious undertaking. I hadn’t really thought of it in this way before but I can see the parallels.

I have previously said that for me Law of Attraction represents something much more than just a “universal catalog” from which I can place my personal orders. I see the study of Law of Attraction as a component of my overall spiritual journey because, as far as I am concerned, Law of Attraction, Universal Consciousness, The Creator, The Tao, Allah, and God, along with a host of others, are all simply different terms for the same thing. I also acknowledge that we are all individuals, each on our own path, and that some may have very different views from myself.

My belief system says that each of us has to “work out our own salvation” which means that I must be accepting of others (I must love others) no matter how different their path may be from mine for their path is just as correct for them as mine is for me. I believe that each one of us is exactly where we should be at any given moment. Moreover, due to my understanding of Law of Attraction, I not only believe that we are where we should be, but I also understand that there would be no way we could be anywhere else!

So, since I work to study and apply the principles of Law of Attraction, do I feel as thought I’ve “arrived” in a religious sense? In a word, no. I have no doubt that my spiritual journey will continue to unfold in a wonderfully exciting way. I know that there is much more for me to learn and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

It’s noteworthy that I don’t really consider the Law of Attraction to be my “religious destination” either. The only reason I wrote the post is because people were bashing the LOA hard core on one of the forums that I read regularly. I suggested that if the conversation had been about Islam, it would have been handled much differently.

The protagonists responded that LOA was not a religion and therefore didn’t deserve the same status as Islam. I proved that, according to the letter of the definition, LOA is technically a religious undertaking.

Sometimes I like to write things just to play devils advocate.

I think a big part of the problems surface with the use of the word “religion” simply because this word has such a strong and unique meaning to each person using it.

I have told many people that I do not see myself as “religious” but I do see myself as “spiritual” which for me means that I choose to focus on the aspects of my relationship with my higher power rather than focusing on any prescribed set of rituals usually associated with a given religion.

I had those thoughts too. As it gets more and more wide spread I can imagine someone trying to make it into a “religion.” However I think that the biggest difference between the LOA and religion is that the LOA can be applied in conjunction with any religion and does not have to be practiced exclusive of any other world beliefs.

But I do have concerns about what could happen should some power hungry manipulator try to “recruit” followers, KWIM?

    Renee,

Since you know that “thoughts become things”, I have to ask why you would want a power hungry manipulator recruiting followers?

What do I mean? Your concerns (thoughts) about it will help manifest it, right??? :-)

The Law of Attraction is a Great Thoughts and Great Believe that if practiced can lead to marverlously positive outcome. Some people obviously can relate this to a religion, nothing wrong with that. Some people does not like the word “religion” so another name can be used to describe this belief and this way of life. Whatever it is, I believe it is a fantastic mind-set direction that (if practiced regularly and wholeheartedly) shall produce what you truely want. Cheers.

    Clyde,

The law of attraction doesn’t preclude me from sharing thoughts in a discussion! Otherwise, it would make life and communication WAY too boring. And who would follow that religion anyway?! It’s all about control about the energy given to a thought.

I see the LOA and Quantum mechanics as a simple, scientific, matter-of-fact way to explain God and religious paths and all that entails; a fresh view apart from the beautifully poetic but sometimes confusing doctrines. I am a convert to Islam and from what I’ve understood from its teachings science and religion go hand in hand.
“What the bleep do we know” is an excellent movie that might help you wrap your head around the LOA, how thoughts actually do become things!

See you somewhere on the path…
